Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose says he didn’t know folks were mad

While the angry and disenchanted are spending their time criticizing Derrick Rose for sitting on the bench during the Chicago Bulls’ current playoff run, HE is focused on his health and supporting his teammates.

He says he didn’t know y’all were out here talkin’ so recklessly about him.

That’s my first time hearing about it,” Rose said Saturday of the critical fan contingent. “I barely turn on the TV. I’m with my son all day. So that’s about it.

“I’m feeling about the same, still being patient, still trying to take care of my body and just trying to enjoy this time and cheer on my teammates.

On the notion that the Bulls organization, his brother Reggie or others are influencing his decisions…

Who said that? If anything, it’s up to me,” Rose said. “My brother and them can’t tell me what to do with my body. They give me control. I’m in control of the whole process. It’s really all on me.

On his teammates support after criticism from TNT’s Steve Kerr

“It’s cool, man. It gives me some comfort,” Rose said of his internal support. “They see how hard I’m working in the gym, just putting my all into the game and sacrificing a lot of stuff to be a better player. Whenever I come back, I know I’m going to be way, way better. Just having that time to relax and be patient and fully heal, that’s the big picture right now.”

Again, if your jaws are tight because Mr. Rose is taking his time to return to basketball and the Bulls, this should let you know that your whining is of no use.

Also, its a little disrespectful to the guys that are on the court, putting in work through injuries and illnesses, to extend the season. Focus your energy on them.

Game 7 against the Brooklyn Nets is tonight at 8 ET on TNT. Get your life.

Cleveland Cavaliers win first pick in draft lottery, again

Cleveland Cavaliers

Dan Gilbert’s Cleveland Cavaliers have landed the first pick in the NBA Draft for the second time in three years.

In 2011, they drafted guard Kyrie Irving, a much needed cornerstone piece, after losing the league’s best player, LeBron James to free agency and eventual NBA Championship glory the previous year.

What of sheer luck in the Cavs receiving the No. 1 pick, again? What of the “Cavs red” bow ties Gilbert and his son Nick wore? What of NBA puppeteering?

Either way, Cleveland will get another piece to its rebuilding puzzle. Will it be the torn ACL-recovering Nerlens Noel? Power forward Anthony Bennett? Or, will they trade the pick?

The 2013 NBA Draft is June 27th. Leading up to that date, we will hear all sorts of rumors and scenarios as to how this draft will shake out, but one things for sure — its not star-studded, so like this years unpredictable NFL Draft, anything is possible.

Brian Urlacher

Brian Urlacher hangs up his cleats

Wednesday, Brian Urlacher announced that he is retiring from the NFL after a 13-year career.

Urlacher is retiring as a member of the only team he’s ever played for, the Chicago Bears. In March, the Bears opted not to bring Urlacher back for another season, and he lightly tested the market, but ultimately decided to leave the game.

After spending a lot of time this spring thinking about my NFL future, I have made a decision to retire,” Urlacher wrote in a statement.

“Although I could continue playing, I’m not sure I would bring a level of performance or passion that’s up to my standards. When considering this, along with the fact that I could retire after a 13-year career wearing only one jersey for such a storied franchise, my decision became pretty clear. I want to thank all of the people in my life that have helped me along the way. I will miss my teammates, my coaches and the great Bears fans. I’m proud to say that I gave all of you everything I had every time I took the field. I will miss this great game, but I leave it with no regrets.

When Urlacher states how much he will miss his teammates, coaches and the Bears’ fans, it feels like a tremendous understatement. It is rare now for an athlete to spend their entire career with one team.

When speaking with The Dan Patrick Show about his decision, Urlacher said, “I didn’t want to play for anybody else.”

The attachment he has and will continue to have to the City of Chicago will be lifelong, much in the same vein as one of his most esteemed Bears predecessors, Mike Ditka.

Urlacher’s career stats stand at 180 games started, 1052, tackles, 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, and two touchdowns. Outstanding.

The Chicago Bears play their home opener September 8, 2013 against the Cincinnati Bengals and one thing is for sure — a void will be felt across the entire city.

Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens play basketball instead of participating in OTA’s

With OTA’s in full swing and kickoff of the 2013 NFL season less than 100 days away, there are two incredibly talented players who are questionably left on the sideline, so to speak…

They are Pro Bowl wide receivers, Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens, who played a combined 26 years in the league.

Ocho and T.O., as they are affectionately known, played a game of pick up basketball today, which you can see below, but doesn’t it feel strange and unreal?

I’ve said before that a second chance is in order, and surely a team could benefit from the services of either man, and before September 5th we might see one or both in pads somewhere.

If not, its long been clear that their off-the-field lives, which have been quite colorful and controversial, have played a large part in how their careers have unfolded.

Honestly, I was hoping for something more storybook for them both.

Deacon Jones, 74, dead of natural causes

The NFL lost a legend when Hall of Fame defensive end, David “Deacon” Jones passed away.

Jones, known as the “Secretary of Defense,” and for his bell-ringing head slap, reportedly died of natural causes, at home in Southern California.

In 1961, the Los Angeles Rams drafted Jones as the 186th overall pick (imagine that) and he began what would be a 10-year career with the Rams, with Rookie of the Year honors. During his time with the Rams, Deacon left his mark as part of the “Fearsome Foursome,” along with Rosie Grier, Lamar Lundy, and Merlin Olsen.

He later played for the Chargers and ended his career with the Redskins.

Unfortunately, complete stats of Deacon’s career are incomplete, but you can get a pretty good grasp of his greatness by watching this video…

Center Greg Oden gets chance to revive career with the Miami Heat

Greg Oden has not seen action on the court since 2009, but that did not deter Pat Riley from giving him a shot in Miami. Friday, the seven-foot center decided to join the Miami Heat, the defending NBA champions, in a quest to continue a career that barely got started after he was drafted as the first pick overall (Portland Trailblazers) of the 2007 draft.

There are two things that stand to derail Oden’s attempt — himself and a pair of surgically repaired knees. Perhaps time, rehabilitation and a desire to finish what he started will be enough to give basketball fans that which they longed for when Oden was coming out of Ohio State University. If that is not enough, the care, camaraderie and support he will receive from the Heat organization and its players could be the extra push he needs to get him over this hurdle.

Expectations are not high, as Oden told ESPN:

“I could be ready to go but it’s still a work in progress,” Oden said. “My minutes and amount of playing time and all that is going to have to be monitored.”

Oden said it was a “big deciding factor” that Heat officials made it clear to him that he “wouldn’t be needed as much early in the season” as he works his way back from more than three years out of the NBA.

“When I had a conversation with Coach [Erik] Spoelstra and hearing how much he knew about the training stuff that I was already doing, it kind of made me feel like they know what’s best for me,” Oden said.

Oden added: “I’m not going to sit here and say I’m 100 percent. I am moving [well] and I am feeling good, but I have a lot of work to do.”

I can’t imagine that anyone will be rooting against Oden. Despite the snide remarks about his mature looks (he appears to be older than his 25 years) or his “bad” knees, it seems the general consensus is one of best wishes for a healthy, successful return.

Oden’s two-year deal will reportedly pay him about $1M per year.

Dwyane, Zaire and Zion Wade pay tribute to Trayvon Martin om cover of Ebony Magazine

Its been several weeks since the Zimmerman verdict, a “not guilty” verdict that divided a lot of people, but awakened many more.

The September issue of EBONY Magazine features four different covers, including the NBA’s Dwyane Wade and his sons, Zaire and Zion. The caption reads, “We Are Trayvon.”

The details of a quest to pass “Trayvon’s Law” are laid out in a feature article that can be read HERE.

The call to action is led by the Dream Defenders (who are currently “sitting in” at the State’s Capital building in Florida) and the NAACP. The legislation seeks to put an end to the now infamous Stand Your Ground laws, and other issues that were highlighted in wake of the taking of Trayvon Martin’s life.

Dwyane Wade, who has over six million followers combined on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, has not been shy about lending his voice and support to the “Justice for Trayvon” movement, often posting photos and messages in support.

Wade and his Miami Heat teammates took this photo in 2012 as a sign of solidarity and to help bring more national attention to Martin’s untimely death.

Miami Heat

Trayvon’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, and his brother Jahvaris Fulton grace one of the four covers, as well as Spike Lee and his son Jackson, and Boris Kodjoe and his son Nicolas.

Hard Knocks premiers on HBO with the Cincinnati Bengals in tow

‘Hard Knocks’ is back!

The show that gives fans the best glimpse into NFL Training Camp life has returned to HBO, featuring the Cincinnati Bengals with Head Coach, Marvin Lewis. This is the Bengals second stint on the show (they first appeared in 2009), but this time there is no Chad Johnson, who last played for the Bengals in 2010.

If you’re fond of the ‘Hard Knocks’ franchise, this season won’t disappoint. Here are five highlights of the premier episode:

1. Coach Hue Jackson. Jackson, the Bengals running back’s coach, might become the show’s breakout star. He has held coaching positions with several teams over his 25-year career, and notably as the head coach for the Oakland Raiders during the 2011 season. He is well respected around the league and has an enormous personality that is sure to entertain. He talks a lot of good natured smack on the practice field. His candidness while at dinner with his running back corp at the beginning of the episode was refreshing — “..people think training camp is a feel good session. It’s not.”

2. AJ Green. Green is the No. 1 receiver in Cincy, and he is also newly engaged to Miranda Brooke, his longtime girlfriend whom he met during his freshman year at the university of Georgia. Green is recovering from a bruised left knee and has not participated in camp since suffering the injury on day one. I can’t blame the team for shutting him down, but how HBO will spin this is a mystery to me.

3. James Harrison. The veteran Pro Bowl linebacker and Super Bowl champ is new to the Bengals after spending the majority of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. What he is not new to, nor keen on, are the Hard Knocks cameras. At every turn, Harrison avoids being filmed and flips the bird to let the crew know that he had no use for their intrusion. I hope that he warms to them at some point, though, because watching him being obstinate will get old very quickly.

4) Adam Jones. Yes, Pacman. While on the way to the first day of training camp, his car ran out of gas. He called his wife, Tishana, and road side service then left the car and hitched a ride to the nearby stadium with a passerby (who, as it turned out, worked at the stadium). Personally, I am interested in seeing a different Pacman than the one we’ve seen in the past, the one who was often in trouble. He has worked hard to continue his football career, so bring on Adam Jones the family man and wise veteran cornerback.

5.) Ladder Toss. During free time, a group of players engaged in a friendly game of ladder toss. I want to play Ladder Toss. Ladder Toss looks like fun.

On a sad note, rookie undrafted free-agent Larry Black saw his season come to an abrupt end when he suffered a dislocated ankle and a broken leg during practice. His tears broke my heart. Chin up, LB.

Check back next week for more observations and a recap of the next episode.

Former Dallas Mavericks dancer allegedly responsible for deadly shooting spree

In what appears to be a domestic tragedy, a former dancer for the Dallas Mavericks all male dance team, the ManiAAcs, is suspected of going on a deadly rampage that has left four people dead, and another four wounded.

According to police, 44-year-old Erbie Bowser, also known as “E-Luv,” walked into a Dallas area home last night and shot four people, including children, and his ex-girlfriend. Two female victims in the house were killed.

Bowser later drove to the home of his ex-wife, where he reportedly threw an explosive device inside, waited for it to detonate, then entered and shot four more people, also including children. Two women in that house were killed.

The kicker is that Bowser attempted to fool police into thinking he was one of the victim’s once they forcefully entered the second house.

Bowser is in custody, but has yet to be charged with any crime, pending further investigation.

Sad, indeed.

Kendrick Lamar

Not even Phil Jackson could reign in Kendrick Lamar

Monday night Twitter reached new heights of frenzy when rapper Big Sean unleashed a previously unreleased track titled, “Control” that also features LA’s Kendrick Lamar, and the ever-elusive Jay Electronica.

Needless to say, Lamar obliterated the track and solidified his position amongst hip hop’s current elite.

So, because sports and hip hop music have been virtually synonymous (word to MJ and AI), I would be remiss if I failed to point out the nod to Phil Jackson that Lamar gave in what is one of the illest verses a rapper has laced us with in recent memory.

He says,

If Phil Jackson came back, still no coaching me.

In order for me to put this into context with his entire verse I would have to quote Lamar’s numerous expletives, and that is against the Ballertainment Bylaws so I will allow you to hear it for yourselves (Kendrick’s verse begins around the 3:00 mark)…

Big Sean and Jay Electronica also delivered, so overall, I dig “Control.” But, the fact that Kendrick implied that not even the man who some consider the best coach in the business could handle him speaks volumes.

And another thing, can you imagine the frames of mind players like Derrick Rose, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Adrian Peterson, RG3, or Calvin Johnson would be in once they hit the court/field after listening to something like this come through their Beats headphones during pre-game?

Man please. Game over.

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali documentary gives insight into the man behind the bravado

Muhammad Ali is an iconic figure. He is, without dispute, “the greatest of all time.”

In his prime, he was brash, charismatic, defiant, incredibly handsome, and a true case study in confidence and a will to win.

Today, Ali is a shell of his former self, due to aging and Parkinson’s disease, but he is no less admired, celebrated and loved. He is, in fact, our collective treasure.

Director Bill Siegel, fully aware of all these things, wanted us to know more about the man who “shook up the world,” and what that really means, so he created “The Trials of Muhammad Ali,” a documentary that exposes us to an Ali that we may not have known as well.

Take a look at the trailer….

We often look at today’s athlete with a grain of disappointment because they are not nearly as vocal as Ali was about issues that affect their communities, their countries, or the world.

While it is each athlete’s prerogative, it would be nice to return to a time when larger than life personas and the platforms on which they are built are used for more than selling a product, or landing on a best-dressed list.

With all due respect, there are many players, male and female, who go about their good deeds without desire for fanfare, and that must be commended, but Ali FOUGHT hard and publicly against what he perceived to be wrong, with a vigor that has been missing for years.

Films such as “Trials” offer an example of the blueprint for change; we just need new architects.

See the film in select theaters beginning mid- September.

Celebrity Crime Files examines the unsolved murder of Lorenzen Wright

TV One’s Celebrity Crime Files shed light on the unsolved murder case of former NBA player, Lorenzen Wright, at the request of Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion.

Marion, who revealed earlier this year that she is battling ovarian cancer, vows to live the rest of days in pursuit of the identity of her son’s murderer(s).

Lorenzen Wright was reported missing by his family on July 22, 2010, after not being heard from for several days. He was last seen by his ex-wife, Sherra Wright, leaving her home on July 18th, 2010.

An investigation revealed that nine days passed from the time an emergency call was made from Wright’s phone until his body was discovered (by gardeners), and by that time the crime scene was depleted of any significant evidence that could have helped solve the case.

Initially, people looked at Sherra Wright with suspicious eyes, but “Crime Files” notes that there is no evidence connecting her to her ex-husband’s disappearance or murder and that she is not a person of interest.

A major question posed during the episode, and all along since the release of the 911 call, is why the two police departments involved failed to investigate immediately when the sound of gunshots were clearly heard on the tapes.

The most heart-breaking parts of the episode are Ms. Marion’s tearful accounts of the events that led to his disappearance and the eventual discovery of his remains.

It is most disturbing that a high profile person’s murder can go this long without being solved. It wreaks of the “don’t snitch” culture that haunts black and brown communities. At some point that needs to stop.

Wright’s parents, his sister, and surely his children deserve better.

This case seems to be cold, but maybe TV One’s coverage will appeal to the heartstrings of those who know what happened.

Anyone with information on Lorenzen’s murder should call the Memphis Police Department at 901-528-2274.

In related news, a settlement was reached in a $2 million civil lawsuit that was filed by Wright’s mother, his father, Herbert Wright, and Sherra Wright. News of the surprising settlement and indications of family discord can be read HERE.

The original movie, The Best Man, a story about college friends who reunite for a wedding, debuted in 1999 and the sequel may be one of the most anticipated films in years.

Fans of the Sullivan character, who is a star running back for a professional New York football franchise, should be very pleased with what they see because Chestnut reportedly lost 30 pounds for the role.

Monica Calhoun plays “Mia,” Chestnut’s wife and the movie’s trailer indicates that they have been keeping a secret from their closest friends. Is one of them suffering an illness? Are they separating? Are they broke? Whatever it is, hopefully its jaw-dropping and juicy!

Also appearing in The Best Man Holiday are Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Regina Hall, Melissa De Souza, Taye Diggs, Terrance Howard, and Harold Perrineau.

BGYC: Allen Iverson holds official retirement presser

Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson retires

Allen Iverson retired Wednesday. All our beloved sports heros retire, one day. Something about this one feels incomplete, though. Perhaps its because Iverson’s career has come to an end in a manner that seems open-ended.

Its not because he did not win a championship — he’s not the only star player who didn’t. Its because we weren’t able to overload on A.I. He’s the type of player that you could never get enough of because he could not get enough — enough basketball, enough fun, enough love.

Michael Tillery of The Starting Five Live was present at the retirement press conference, and I asked him to give me one word to describe the mood in that room. He said, “soul.” As I sat back and thought about it, A.I., or “Chuck” as he is affectionately called, brought plenty of soul to the game of hoops. His dogged play, his personal style, and his attitude were all soulful.

Iverson’s crossover? Killer. His cornrows? Quite the same.

Ann Iverson’s baby boy is a legend. An NBA legend. A Philadelphia 76ers god.

He’s a an eleven time NBA All-Star and was Rookie of the Year in 1996, but the sad part is that his draft classmates, Ray Allen, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Derek Fisher are all still in The League, and Steph Marbury continues to play in China.

He gave us one of the most highly criticized and overused soundbites in all of sports with his “practice” rant. He is a case study in Athlete 101. He had it all, and lost most of it — the fame, his family, the money (although there is reportedly a great sum put away for safe keeping that he can’t touch until his mid-fifties), and the opportunity to truly revive his career and finish it in the fairytale manner we all expected.

Allen Iverson is the embodiment of Ballertainment. He is perhaps a good example of what the little girl said about wanting more in a popular AT&T commercial.

If you missed the presser, no worries, BGYC (Ballertainment’s Got You Covered)…

He says he’s happy with his decision to retire during this time. Is he being truthful? Who knows? It can be said that a lot of the reasons for his past troubles, and the results thereof, were because he wasn’t truthful with himself.

When Tillery gave me the word “soul” today, I didn’t ask him to expound. It could have meant several things – Like, maybe the room felt all warm and fuzzy with blackness and that brand of LOVE that belongs strictly to Philadelphia and sounds like Teddy Pendergrass, or maybe A.I. bared his soul while sitting at that table, or could it be that his soul seemed empty as he said goodbye?

Maybe it was all of these things. Maybe none.
